Hydraulic characteristics of installation polypropylene pipe with numerous socket fittings

Abstract
This paper presents results of laboratory and numerical research concerning water flow resistance through polypropylene
installation pipe containing numerous socket fittings. The straight PP-R 20 × 3,4 mm PN 20 6 meters long with 2, 3, 5, 9
and 17 welded PP socket fittings was tested. The laboratory research was performed with the variable value of volumetric
water flow rate 300–1600 dm3/h while the numerical calculations were performed in the commercial modeling software
FLUENT, ANSYS Inc. The obtained results of laboratory measurements covered height of local losses, values of minor losses
coefficients and the hydraulic resistance of the studied pipe. The numerical calculations allowed assessment of velocity
magnitude and turbulence intensity during water flow through the tested local pressure losses. The obtained results suggest
the clear increase in flow resistance and changes in Reynolds number dependable value of minor losses coefficient caused
by the increase in number of applied socket fittings. Additionally, it was determined that the obtained values of minor losses
coefficients are higher than the commonly proposed input data for domestic installations designing, which may result in the
design errors and incorrect operation of the system.
